- Dryali, Kaikoa, and Kaelani are in Freelancers' Tavern. Presumably Dryali and Kaikoa are telling Kaelani about the hippogryph.
- A very pale, black-horned, black-eyed hanyou walks in off the street, clearly young and poor, named Manu; and expresses a desire to join the Freelancers.
- Manu has no hair.
- Dryali, Kaikoa, and Kaelani take this as a sign to seek fun and profit from the Freelancers. Surely Manu can use the gold! They troop up to Arnari's office to ask for something they can do.
- Arnari notes the following work available, each of which yields 100g each:
- Sneak into the Daystar worshippers' meeting
- Travel south to Mantzur in the Haven Hills, to help Āhua's Children
- Go help the town of Haven with the orchards' harvest
- Kaikoa narrows his eyes and says "Tell us more, about these… Daystar worshippers."
- Arnari explains Waiola, Typhoon of the Church of Storms, wants someone to sneak into the Daystar worshipper meeting and find out what they are doing.
- The Daystar is a star, not a god. Everyone looks suspicious. Kaelani says, "Tell us about the Children of Āhua."
- Arnari explains the path to Mantzur has become dangerous, and persons walking upon it get attacked by bloodhawks.
- Dryali demands, "What's a bloodhawk?"
- Arnari explains: the bloodhawks are clever hunters, and often use pack tactics like wolves.
- Dryali imagines the grblins riding them.
- An argument ensues.
- Kaelani: "Seems more straightforward."
- Kaikoa: "Hippies don't attack in packs."
- Manu pipes up. His accent is very strange. "This gathering is less travel!"
- Kaikoa (to Kaelani): "You just prefer the nature."
- Kaelani shrugs. "It's a straight-up fight!"
- Dryali interjects: "It's un-natural to worship the Daystar!" Everyone looks at him. He puts his goggles back on and sits back, arms crossed.
- Kaelani turns to Arnari. "What about the orchard?"
- Arnari replies, "They are getting attacked. There are rowdy trees."
- Kaikoa scoffs, "What, there are treants?!"
- Dryali, only back in Cliffshadow for a day, exclaims "It's far!"
- Kaelani appears resigned. "I can tell I'm getting outvoted."
- Dryali asks Arnari, "Infiltrate?! Look at us. Are we supposed to hide we are Freelancers? Do we need a disguise?"
- Arnari says calmly, "Waiola just said: don't get caught. Don't let them know you are associated with the Church of Storms."
- Kaikoa, trying to puzzle it out, asks, "Was there some precipitating event?" Dryali glances at Kaelani to see if he bristles at this choice of words, but the latter ignores it.
- Arnari says, "No" almost like she is good friends with the Typhoon. Dryali scowls. "What church are YOU?"
- A moment of silence, then Kaikoa says, "Well, that's rude."
- Arnari looks around her office as if gathering solace, or patience, from the instruments laying about. Then she says with deliberate calmness, "Of course all reasonable people show honour to the Church of Storms."
- Kaelani: "Let's take our leave."
- After they walk out, Dryali blurts out, "DON'T disrespect Church of Storms!" He explains how important it is on Nadezhda, with its spectacular views of the central storm, the actual home of Hau and Whatitiri.
- The discussion turns to how to discover the meeting place of these Daystar worshippers. Everyone figures they were probably using pamphlets.
- Manu exclaims, "Religions! They try to recruit us on the streets all the time!"
- Dryali: "If they pamphlet, they will do so in the government square."
- Kaelani: "I should ask… at Church of Ua!"
- Decide all will go with Kaelani.
- Church of Ua is near the south of town. In the church are prominent water features. Acolytes do rituals in the alcoves with rainsticks so it always sounds like it's raining.
- The Downpour, Anuhea, greets Kaelani warmly. "Welcome Kaelani and friends." Kaikoa mutters something inaudible.
- Kaelani informed Anuhea, "We're working with Freelancers, and heard there were Daystar worshippers."
- Anuhea: "Who worships the Daystar?!"
- Dryali: "That's what I said!"
- Anuhea: "It would be troubling [for this to happen] because it sows confusion."
- Kaikoa mutters, "Dirty hippies."
- Kaelani glances at him, then intones: "If they were dirty, they could go into the cleansing rain."
- The Downpour, pleased, responds, "Exactly, who worships the Daystar."
- Anuhea, addressing Kaelani, "It could take a while to research. Do you want me to assign an acolyte to look this up?"
- Kaikoa: "I wanted this done by Beer time."
- Anuhea: "well, let us know."
- Manu asks her: "If you wanted to worship the Daystar, where would you go?"
- Anuhea looks taken aback. "I do not know…"
- Speculation, then party leaves.
- While leaving Church of Ua, Kaikoa's chair contraption goes "oop cow" again. Fed up Kaikoa searches the entire thing until he finds a coin tucked into it that says "oop cow" every time he touches it. He puts the coin in a pouch.
- Wander up Sangria Boulevard (the big curvy N/S street on the map), past the taverns and such. It curves northward past the government buildings, docks, and finally the park; figured that'd encompass all the likely places. Look for flyers or pamphlet people..
- Dryali and Kaelani notice some people talking up passerby about how awesome the Daystar is, and urging them to go to a meeting in the park. They all seem unnaturally mellow.
- Tell the others after walking past. Manu and Kaikoa double back to talk to them. "You are not the target audience," they assure Dryali and Kaelani.
- Manu and Kaikoa find out about a meeting location in the NW quadrant of the park, sunny and mossy. Someone named Gillian?
- Come back and relay this to Dryali and Kaelani.
- All decide to go. Dryali tells Kaelani, maybe with his mossy head he can be camouflaged.
- <some time later> at the gathering. Dryali, unconvinced he could convince anyone his begoggled Dark elf self belongs with a group of Daystar worshippers, hides in a tree. The others mingle with the gathering.
- <narrator voice> Dryali isn't hiding at all, because rolled a "3"
- The people in front are in weird yellow vests. There's a female human in a crappy gilt headdress that looked like it's trying to represent the Daystar. She is wearing a diaphanous sleeveless vest, because the GM had to show off vocabulary
- <narrator voice> The GM is now ranting at me that 4 years of Dartmouth education have to be good for something.
- Gilt head lady looks up at Dryali. "Want to come join us?" Dryali shakes his head. Not interested. "Come down!" Dryali just looks at her. "Wait, are you stuck in the tree?" She signals two burly dudes, Carlos (male human) and Sebastian (male Rain sagani), to help Dryali out of the tree. Disgusted, he climbs down, feeling more out of place in the middle of these people than he did in the tree.
- Gilt head lady starts to address the group, about the benefits of the Daystar, and how everyone should catch some rays, and to prevent burns they should buy this nice lotion sold by Mansel (male human). She calls out Manu in all his paleness, pointing out that Manu would especially benefit from the lotion. She urges people to buy the lotion and sell it to their friends.
- Dryali was utterly unable to disguise how not into this entire affair he was. Who worships the Daystar? Why would a dark elf? Nobody would be fooled and why should he try
- <narrator voice> Shari didn't want to bother rolling and rolled like a 5 anyhow.
- Suspicious of Dryali, gilt head lady disperses the meeting, blaming Dryali for harshing everyone's mellow and promising the attendees "We'll deal with the Dark elf."
- Happier Dryali also tries to disperse, but Sebastian and Carlos were suddenly armed with clubs and menacing him. Carlos in attack range! "Gillian wants to talk to you."
- Dryali exclaims, "This is a public park!" He draws his rapier. "Get off me!"
- Gillian points at Dryali. "Stay right there!" Dryali froze, paralyzed. "We need to talk more, about the Daystar!"
- Manu takes advantage of the distraction to run over to the stand of suntan lotions and start rooting through it, upsetting Mansel.
- Also in the name of dispersing, Kaikoa tries to accidentally on purpose knock burly Carlos over with his chair contraption on the way out, but just bounces off him.
- The upset Mansel runs over to where Manu was rummaging through the lotions, but is unable to do anything to stop the hanyou's mischief.
- <narrator voice> let the fighting commence!
- Sebastian tries to attack Kaelani, who instead of dispersing had just altered his stance with rainstick/quarterstaff in hand. Kaelani knocks him out with it.
- The burly Carlos, seeing Dryali paralyzed, turns and hit Kaikoa with his club.
- Gillian pointed at Kaelani and commanded him to "Flee!"
- Manu tosses the lotions in Mansel's face - the latter tries to catch what he can, and put back into the bottles, exclaiming in dismay. Manu then backs off, pulling out a sling.
- Kaikoa has been around the block and seeing Gillian casting harmful spells, throws his axe at her, whiffing past her ear.
- Kaelani flees as fast as he can.
- Gillian cries out, "Bask in the glory of the Daystar!" and sears a surprised Kaikoa. Dryali, watching, would scowl if he wasn't paralyzed. The Daystar is a star, not a god. Where is her power coming from?
- Manu picks up a rock and hits Carlos in the face with it using his sling. "What is wrong with you! DON'T hit people in wheelchairs! You are hurting my friend!"
- Kaikoa, fed up with these attacks, pulls out his longsword and tries to hit Carlos. However this was entirely awkward with the chair and all, and he misses his swing. Kaelani strolls over and also whiffs with his rainstick staff.
- Gillian cries out again, "Bask in the glory of the Daystar!" and sears an entirely unsurprised and displeased Kaikoa. Manu picks up another rock and hits her with the sling, un-paralyzing Dryali, who leans forward, gasping for breath.
- Kaikoa runs Carlos through.
- Mansel, seeing the situation turning about, says urgently "Gillian… we should exit," and suits action to words, taking as much of the lotion as he could carry. Gillian does not take kindly to this, declaring, "You coward! The Daystar frowns on you!" Dryali does not observe this declaration to have any spell effects on the fleeing Mansel, so maybe Gillian speaks this way all the time. So now the fight is focussed on this Gillian person who, impossibly, presents as a cleric of the Daystar.
- Kaelani menaces Gillian with his rainstick, making it make the rain sound. "Surrender in the name of Ua!" he cries out ringingly, which does not impress Gillian at all.
- Dryali, wishing to dish out as good as he got, pulls out his hand crossbow, casting arcane weapon on it. He'd normally be inclined to put thunder damage, but decides since this human was dishing out fire damage on Kaikoa, perhaps cold was more effective. He then proceeds to fire a bolt and miss.
- Gillian reaches out and touches Kaelani, declaring "The Daystar burns you!" and wow it sure does. Kaelani staggers, smoke emerging from under his mail. Gillian uses this opportunity to back off, but Kaelani is not having it and enthusiastically beats her with the rainstick.
- Manu picks up another rock and uses the sling to hit Gillian. He is not happy to see his new-found friends getting hurt like this.
- Kaikoa chases after where Gillian has gone, looking for his handaxe that had whiffed past her before. Frustrated that he can't see it, he throws his daggar at her. He's better with a daggar than at darts. She staggers.
- Kaelani moves up and hits her with the rainstick as Dryali sends another bolt whizzing by. Gillian turns and touches Kaelani again, calling out even more stridently, "The Daystar burns you!" Kaelani collapses in a smoking heap, the moss on his head smouldering off.
- Kaikoa goes to Kaelani and tries to stabilize him.
- <narrator voice> Did not succeed, so death save time.
- Manu and Dryali both hit Gillian with sling and crossbow. But despite her increasing wobbliness Gillian takes off like a bat out of the hells.
- Manu and Kaikoa stabilize Kaelani and Carlos, while Dryali pulls out his jeweler's tools to reconstruct his ability to detect magic, becuase the entire scenario is too weird not to have involved some magic. Kaikoa also loots Carlos and Sebastian, almost like doing so is a professional habit of his.
- The lotion had a little trace of abjuration and enchantment magic.
- Decide to bring back samples, enough to provide Church of Ua, Freelancers Guild, and Church of Storms, all of whom would be interested.
- Remaining bottles are broken, so improvise containers.
- Kaikoa shoves Kaelani into the chair, but that leaves Sebastian and Carlos, which nobody wants to just leave here for these Daystar worshippers to find at their next gathering, or late arrivals finding now. Tie them up. After some discussion, decide to give Manu Kaelani's share of the looted coin, and send him quickquick over to the stables at Freelancers Tavern, to get some goodberries from Sovelai.
- [not sure how much time that took but less-than-an-hour] Manu returns with 5 goodberries.
- Feed a goodberry to Kaelani. "What? What? Wha'happen?" "you got burned!" "you have no hair!" Kaelani said, "I can lay on hands!" Everyone tells him go behind a bush to do that, good grief
- Feed a goodberry to each of Carlos and Sebastian and question them. They are just thugs. They do not know Gillian or Mansel's last names; they don't know what, if anything, the lotion is doing to them.
- More discussion. Don't really want to bring these two back to Freelancers; not sure what larger thing this Gillian is a part of, and Freelancers is neutral. Bringing back to Church of Storms breaks the contract. Decide to bring back to Church of Ua; after all, these guys attacked one of their paladins.
- Anuhea is dismayed at how badly off Kaelani is, and healed him up.
- They will take care of Carlos and Sebastian.
- Leave a lotion sample.
- Return to Freelancers. Did not RP this part, but
- Give Arnari a report and two lotion samples
- Do not mention how Kaelani almost died.
- Explain since they were all seen, did not want to directly go to Church of Storms to talk to Waiola about this.
