Idle gossip

  • Jamie escaped from the Skyguard building after it was set aflame. Bryseis Seere has not yet contacted the guild with details or a new mission.
  • Arnari is still away on her mission. Tomtom is still handling the mission details.
  • Garth Nimblefingers is looking for adventurers to test out a trap he designed.
  • Pollution at Lakeview is still outstanding.

The mission (should we choose to accept it)

Intel from the Daystar cult interrogation has uncovered a safehouse, we believe Mansel is there.

  • Raid this safehouse.
  • Capture Mansel and any other cultists for interrogation.
  • Return them to the Typhoon at the Church of Storms

The warehouse is in the trade district. It’s adjacent to many other warehouses and has a front door (5ft wide) and a back-alley door (10ft) wide. Kaikoa and Mordant fly overhead to scout out the area, finding 2 skylights. There are some people on a roof far enough away to not matter, so the party decides to set up their stakeout on top of the buildings.

We split the party into pairs. Tahu and Terrance take the south skylight. Kalleth and Fine Branch watch the north skylight. Kaikoa and Mordant watch the streets. We pass stealth checks and discover the following about the warehouse:

  • There are 2 floors, with a staircase on the east side.
  • On the west side, there is an alchemy bench and a few cultists at work.
  • 1 cultist is on the 2nd floor and 3 cultists are on the first floor.
  • About half of the 1st floor is concealed
  • There is no sign of Mansel, even though our intel indicated he’d be there.

We wait a couple hours keeping watch and eventually determine:

  • There are 3 more cultists
  • 2 match the description of Ethan and Mansel
  • Ethan - big, burly, and very tanned. Has sun bleached hair.
  • Mansel - human

We recall (out of character) that Mansel said Ethan was pleased with their work in a previous encounter, so we think he’s a bigger boss. Dryali discovered that Ethan was likely the person he and Tahu saw on their scouting mission to the trade district a long time ago, so Tahu can recognize him.

Strategy time

  • Kaikoa suggests we block the doors and break in through the skylights
  • Fine Branch will send in their doppelgänger to aid in the fight, but remain on the roof.
  • Tahu gives Fine Branch a 50ft rope which they can lower after combat when we need a way out.
  • Kaikoa and Terrance will clear the 2nd floor using the south skylight.
    • Terrance will break through the glass with a blanket to protect herself.
    • Kaikoa will ride Mordant down. Mordant will then return to the roof until needed.
  • Kalleth and Tahu will descend to the 1st floor with 2 ropes
    • Kalleth will pry off the skylight as a feat of strength. It should only open a few inches on it’s own.
    • Tahu helps Kalleth pry the window open.

Roll for initiative

TLDR

  • 2 cultists murdered by the party
  • 1 cultist murdered by Ethan
  • 1 cultist wrapped up like a burrito
  • “Sun”, a special cultist with magic, surrendered and is in custody.
  • Ethan and Mansel escaped.

  • Order: Terrance -> Fine Branch -> Ethan -> Tahu -> Cultists -> Kalleth - > Mansel -> Kaikoa
  • Terrance breaks the window but sticks the landing acrobatically.
  • Fine Branch’s doppelgänger materializes, struts across the warehouse floor, and strikes 2 poses.
  • Ethan bursts into golden flames (radiant looking)
  • Tahu helps Kalleth with the window, then descends taking some rope burn damage.
  • Kalleth follows, taking more rope burn damage from the descent.
  • The mobs wield scimitars.
  • Kaikoa crits the cultist on the second floor, murdering him. He then heads down the stairs
  • Terrance dashes all the way down to the first floor and murders another cultist.
  • Fine Branch casts Toll the Dead: “A glockenspiel of Beethoven’s 5th.” Ethan passes the save.
  • Ethan draws a scimitar which sparkles radiantly and is adorned with daystar symbols. He attacks Terrance, but Kalleth intercepts the blow reducing it to just 3 radiant damage.
  • Tahu hits one cultist for 12 and subdues them.
  • Tahu gets hit for 3 slashing damage.
  • “Sun” the cultist makes Kalleth do a Wisdom save. Luckily he passes. (Hold Person?)
  • “Sun” Also casts Spiritual Weapon as a bonus action. Spiritual Weapon misses Kalleth.
  • Mansel cases Spiritual Weapon on Terrance, but misses. Also forces Tahu to make a Wisdom save, but nothing happens. (also Hold Person?)
  • Kalleth moves up to Ethan and attacks, hitting for 9. He also shoves as a bonus action knocking Ethan prone!
  • Kaikoa is not in the golden flames, so nothing happens. He casts Levitate on Mansel, but nothing happens.
  • Terrance takes 9 radiant damage for being near Ethan, but she deals 20 damage back because he’s prone.
  • Fine Branch casts Toll the Dead on Ethan again for 2 necrotic damage.
  • Ethan yells at Mansel in Primordial: “Get Out!” He also casts Flame Sphere and hits Kalleth with it. Kalleth saves, and thanks to shield mastery, spends a reaction to reduce the damage to 0.
  • Tahu disengages from “4” and “Sun” to pursue a fleeing Mansel, but misses his attack.
  • Mobs miss Kalleth
  • Sun’s spiritual weapon crits Kalleth for 11. Moves to Tahu and attacks, but it doesn’t hit.
  • Mansel attacks Terrance with spiritual weapon (but misses?) Casts Hold Person on Tahu again, but it still doesn’t work
  • Kalleth subdues “4”, but takes 9 damage from radiant flames and 0 from the flaming sphere at the start of his turn.
  • Kaikoa moves next to Kalleth and Ethan. His attack misses Ethan.
  • Kaikoa uses Action surge to hit him for 8 and apply Unwavering Mark
    • Ethan gets disadvantage if he attacks anyone but Kaikoa.
    • If he deals damage to anyone else, Kaikoa gets a bonus action attack on his next turn.
    • That attack gets bonus damage and is made at advantage too!
  • Terrance succeeds her save against Ethan’s radiant flames, but still takes 13 damage!
    • Silver Lining: At least this triggers Kaikoa’s Unwavering Mark.
  • Terrance attacks Ethan for 16 damage, then disengages and leaves the fire.
  • Fine Branch casts Toll the Dead on Ethan again, but he saves. He also casts healing word on Terrance who’s in bad shape.
  • Ethan Kills an unconscious cultist with his flaming sphere! Then he ignites the alchemy table with it! Finally he runs to Mansel and Dimension Door’s both of them away!
    • Oof!
  • Sun yells at Tahu “Daystar Burn You” and grabs him dealing 12 radiant damage
  • Tahu misses his first strike, but hits the second for 17 damage to Sun. Sun is still up.
  • Terrance rolls up “4” (unconscious, but still alive) in her blanket -- burrito style.
  • Fine Branch casts Create or Destroy Water to rain inside the warehouse, dousing all the flames.
    • “Thunder, Thunder, Thunder Cat!” -- Matt Harris, 2020
  • Tahu misses again, but offhand does 11. Sun is still, still up.
  • Sun surrenders and offers the party a discount on the lotion.

Post combat intel

  • Fine Branch asks for the recipe. Sun can’t/won’t give it to us.
  • Sun reports to Mansel who reports to Ethan.
  • Ethan is in charge of Duquesne operations. Implying that they have a presence on other skyliths as well.
  • Sun confirms that they want a presence wherever the daystar shines.
